Jamaica’s Global Family: The Power of the Diaspora. The word “diaspora” describes people who live outside their country of origin or ancestry yet remain deeply connected to it. For Jamaica, this global family includes not only emigrants but also their children and grandchildren who proudly carry the island in their hearts.
A Strategic Partner in Nation-Building.
Jamaica views its Diaspora as a vital partner in sustainable development. By building strong networks of Jamaicans and Friends of Jamaica worldwide, the nation can tap into skills, ideas, and resources that foster economic growth, enhance social services, and expand Jamaica’s international influence.
The Government of Jamaica (GoJ) actively supports this effort through a structured Diaspora movement and a biennial Global Jamaica Diaspora Conference, which brings together leaders and innovators to drive economic and social progress.

The impact of the Jamaican Diaspora is extraordinary:
Economic Support: Remittances account for roughly 17% of Jamaica’s GDP.
Travel & Tourism: Diaspora visitors make up 11–15% of total arrivals, supporting local businesses and culture.
Community Giving: Hundreds of Diaspora organizations fund projects in healthcare, education, sports, business investment, and trade.
Health Missions: Each year, more than 200 volunteer missions deliver free medical care—especially in rural communities.
Education & Health Aid: Over a recent four-year span, contributions to schools and health facilities totaled nearly US $9 million.
